Are window tints legal in the UK?
Yes, when installed within UK law. By law, the front windscreen must allow at least 75% light transmission (70% for vehicles manufactured before 1 April 1985), and front side windows (driver & passenger) must allow at least 70% light transmission. There are zero legal limits on rear side windows and the rear windscreen — they can be tinted as dark as you prefer, including 5% limo tint.
What is the difference between ceramic tint and carbon tint?
Carbon tint provides deep black aesthetic shade and blocks 99% UV without fading or purpling. Ceramic tint is the highest grade available, containing nano-ceramic particles that block both 99% UV and up to 60% infrared heat, keeping your interior dramatically cooler in summer without interfering with mobile, GPS, or keyless entry signals.
How long does window tinting take?
A rear-three-quarter or rear-screen tint typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A full vehicle tint (rear glass plus legal front sides) takes around 3 to 4 hours in our climate-controlled Uxbridge studio.
How long after installation can I roll my windows down?
We recommend keeping your windows wound up for 48 hours after installation. This allows the mounting solution to cure completely and guarantees that edges stay firmly bonded to the glass.
Will window tinting affect my heated rear windscreen demister?
No. Our window films are specifically engineered to be installed directly over factory rear window heating elements. The demister will continue functioning normally without damaging the film.
Can you remove old, bubbling, or faded tint?
Yes. We provide professional window tint removal using steam and specialized adhesive removers that safely clean the glass without damaging rear demister lines or antenna circuits.
What tint percentages (shades) do you offer?
We offer a full spectrum of VLT (Visible Light Transmission) shades: 70% (Light/Legal Front), 50% (Subtle Light Smoke), 35% (Medium Smoke), 20% (Dark Smoke / Factory Privacy match), and 5% (Limo Black Privacy). We also supply Chameleon windscreen films.
What is chameleon window tint?
Chameleon tint is an advanced multi-layered solar film that shifts color (between purple, blue, and gold) depending on angle and sunlight while delivering high optical clarity and heat rejection. When tested with a tint meter, our road-legal chameleon films pass the legal 75% windscreen threshold on compliant vehicles.
Does window tinting help prevent smash-and-grab theft?
Yes. While standard window tint is not ballistic glass, the strong polyester film bonds tightly to the glass, holding shattered fragments together in the event of an attempted break-in or collision.
Why do some cheap tints turn purple and bubble?
Cheap dyed polyester films degrade when exposed to solar UV rays, causing the dye to bleach into purple and the glue to break down into smelly bubbles. At Obsidian Custom Designs, we exclusively use color-stable carbon and ceramic films backed by lifetime warranties.
Will tinting reduce glare while driving?
Yes, significantly. Window film cuts sun glare and high-beam headlight glare from following vehicles at night, reducing eye fatigue and making motorway driving safer.
Do you offer mobile window tinting?
To guarantee flawless, factory-clean results, all window tinting is performed inside our specialized, dust-controlled studio in Uxbridge (Tavistock Works, UB7 7QX). Mobile outdoor installs risk airborne dust, wind contamination, and premature peeling.
